Austrian firm opens beauty care packaging plant in North Carolina

Plastic packaging supplier Alpla is opening a $7.2m (€5.2m) facility in North Carolina to produce plastic bottles for shampoo, conditioners and body wash products.

 

The facility will operate out of a Unilever plant in Raeford, one of the company’s biggest clients, according to press reports.

Crabtree & Evelyn files for bankruptcy in the US

Specialty soaps and skin care provider Crabtree & Evelyn has filed for bankruptcy in the US, becoming the latest personal care player to fall victim to the economic crisis.

The company today announced that it was filing for chapter 11 of the US bankruptcy code, and underlined the fact that other affiliates, including operations in the European Union, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and Australia, were not filing for protection of this kind.

Seaweed in cosmetics wins green technology funding

The Technology Strategy Board has invested in a project to develop skin and hair care products using natural compounds from British seaweed varieties.

The project is one of 18 others in a total investment of ₤20 million in ‘green technology’, which aims to develop new or improved sustainable materials, processes and products in the UK.

Sustainable seaweed production

The objective of this particular project is to develop a comprehensive range of hair colorants and hair and skin care agents derived from British seaweeds using sustainable technology throughout its life cycle from source, through production, to end use and appropriate disposal.

Boots pulls out of ethical trading commitment

Boots has been accused of “turning its back on workers” after the health and beauty retailer pulled out of the Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI).

The ETI aims to improve conditions and rights for workers and has built up a membership that includes 56 firms with a joint turnover of more than £100bn. NGOs and trade unions are also members and their job is to scrutinize company claims and ensure that they honour their ethical commitments.
