Nanodiamonds deliver insulin for wound healing

Bacterial infection is a major health threat to patients with severe burns and other kinds of serious wounds such as traumatic bone fractures. Recent studies have identified an important new weapon for fighting infection and healing wounds: insulin.

Now, using tiny nanodiamonds, researchers at Northwestern University have demonstrated an innovative method for delivering and releasing the curative hormone at a specific location over a period of time. The nanodiamond-insulin clusters hold promise for wound-healing applications and could be integrated into gels, ointments, bandages or suture materials.

Sunscreens need to be convenient, multifunctional and protect against UV in order to compete with UV filter-containing skincare, according to Mintel.

One in ten new cosmetic and skin care launches in the last year contained sun-blocking ingredients, according to the market research company.

Despite being hailed as the next big thing to hit the cosmetics industry, beauty foods are receiving only ‘casual interest’ from British consumers, according to market research company Datamonitor.

Beauty foods can come in all shapes and sizes, from anti-ageing yoghurts to anti-acne chocolate, and many industry analysts are predicting big things for the sector.

Johnson and Johnson sales hit by tough retail environment

Leading pharmaceutical and personal care player Johnson & Johnson has been hit hard during its second quarter by the global economic recession.

Sales for the quarter fell by a total of 7.4 percent, down from $16.45bn in the corresponding period last year, to reach $15.24bn.

Austrian firm opens beauty care packaging plant in North Carolina

Plastic packaging supplier Alpla is opening a $7.2m (€5.2m) facility in North Carolina to produce plastic bottles for shampoo, conditioners and body wash products.

 

The facility will operate out of a Unilever plant in Raeford, one of the company’s biggest clients, according to press reports.

Beiersdorf invests €10 million to double production in Thailand

Beiersdorf has invested €10 million to expand a factory in Bangplee, Thailand in order to double the manufacturing capacity of its Nivea products and capitalize on the fast expanding South East Asian market.

In Beiersdorf’s first quarter results, published at the beginning of May, sales in Africa, Asia and Australia increased to €254 m – a rise in organic terms of 5.5 percent. Double-digit increases were recorded in Thailand, making this market an obvious one to concentrate on.

NZ skincare brand goes carbon neutral to allay ‘food mile’ concerns

New Zealand-based brand Snowberry has achieved carbon neutral certification for all of its luxury skin care products.

The company is a major exporter and being able to prove it has offset its greenhouse gas emissions is increasingly important, according to managing director Mark Henderson.

Crabtree & Evelyn files for bankruptcy in the US

Specialty soaps and skin care provider Crabtree & Evelyn has filed for bankruptcy in the US, becoming the latest personal care player to fall victim to the economic crisis.

The company today announced that it was filing for chapter 11 of the US bankruptcy code, and underlined the fact that other affiliates, including operations in the European Union, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and Australia, were not filing for protection of this kind.

Water-based fragrances could ‘revolutionize’ fine fragrance and personal care products, according to Dow Chemical Company.

An alcohol free fragrance system was awarded the FiFi technological breakthrough of the year award. The award was given to French fragrance house Mane, which used the Dow-developed system in a recent Coty launch.
